Soliloquy - Felix Martin
Soliloquy (Die unstillbare Gier – English Version)
- The English recording of “Die Unstillbare Gier” was released in 2005.
- This version has different lyrics from the official English ones.
- Lyrics “The skies were pure and the fields were green” were changed to “The wheat was golden and the fields were green”.
- In the Martin recording, “his body” is changed to “his candor”, suggesting a shift in von Krolock’s feelings towards Napoleon’s page.
- Steinman was credited as the music writer, not the lyricist for this CD.
- Michael Kunze, the original German lyricist, was credited for all the lyrics on the CD.
- Felix Martin was not involved with “Der Tanz der Vampire” until after the Broadway production.
Von Krolock:
Well, alright, no stars tonight
The moon must hide, can’t bear to see my face
So many moons have passed, so many suns gone down
Too much blood under the bridge
Too many worlds turned upside down
The wheat was golden and the fields were green
In that summer sixteenhundredseventeen
The first time I ever drew blood
She was such a beautiful and innocent child
She never knew my soul was cursed for good
I fought to overcome my thirst, I thought I could
But when I kissed her lips, it came over me
The beast in me ran wild
As always when I tried to get it all
I killed that which I yearned
I want to be a flame and turn to ashes
But I have never burned
I want to fly up high and higher
But I sink deep and deeper instead
I want to be an angel or the devil himself
But I am nothing but a creature
Longing for the things I never can have!
For the sake of satisfaction
I would suffer all torments
But our longings are elusive–the hunger never ends
When the world has drawn its final breath
And extinguished all the lights
There’ll be nothing left but a lifeless wasteland
And an endless appetite
Nothing left but a soundless heartbeat
And a ruthless appetite
The preacher’s daughter let me in her room
In seventeenthirtytwo to love me was her doom
With her own blood I wrote a poem of love
Upon her ivory skin
And the bashful page of Napoleon the Great
In eighteenhundredthirteen he stood at the gate
When I recall his candor I can’t help thinking
To kill him was a sin
Each time I grab for life it slips away
My vigor is a sham
I want to grasp the world with all its mysteries
But I don’t know who I am
I long to fly in total freedom
And yet my chains keep dragging me down
I want to be a felon or an absolute saint
But I am nothing but a creature
Full of lies and doubts
I must destroy
Whatever I love
The split goes through my very soul
It’s a wound that never mends
No escape and no redemption–the hunger never ends
There are those who believe in science
And those who believe in art
There are those who believe in power and wealth
Or in love and matters of the heart
There are those who believe in various gods
In nations and knowledge
In hell and in heaven
In sins and in virtues
In the choice of wrong and right
But I know
There’s no other god
But the ever inescapable
Immoral
Indestructible
And all consuming
Appetite
A prediction I will now make
I’m sure I will be right
When the next millenium finally comes
The god most worshipped in this world
Will be the god of appetite....
